The Professional Development Committee (PDC) of SARBS presents online training on the topics related to emerging contaminants at wastewater treatment plants.

Topic 1: Microplastics and emerging concerns on contaminants in wastewater

The presentation will include an introduction to microplastics, the current status of testing methods, the latest findings/literature review, current status in the industry, and prospects. Conclusions will include future research needs and observations of contaminant impacts on the industry.

Topic 2: Regulatory Landscape for PFAS in Biosolids

Discussion and description of the regulatory landscape for PFAS in biosolids. Topics include an update on recent findings and regulatory results, national, state, and local drivers, interconnection to groundwater standards, greenhouse gas emission reduction goals (SB1383), and organics management capacity.

Topic 3: Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products – Their Occurrence and Removal During Wastewater Treatment

This presentation provides a highlight on Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products commonly occurred in wastewater influents and how they are transformed and removed during conventional and advanced wastewater treatment.

          Preeti Thimmaraju, Brown and Caldwell

Preeti Thimmaraju has been working for Brown and Caldwell for over 4 years. She obtained her master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from UC Irvine and interned at the SFPUC Southeast Treatment Plant before she started working at BC. Preeti has experience working on biosolids and energy projects doing conceptual level and detailed design for multiple clients across California. Preeti is an engaged member of the wastewater industry and is passionate about sharing information on emerging trends and challenges we face in the industry.


            Gregorio Estrada, P.E. HDR Engineering, Inc.

Gregorio leads HDR’s Southern California wastewater practice and brings experience in planning, design, construction, and management of wastewater treatment plants throughout Southern California. He specializes in wastewater treatment processes with an emphasis in biological and advanced treatment including nutrient removal, filtration, membranes, and disinfection.


            Mary Martis, P.E. HDR Engineering, Inc.

Mary brings a dynamic background, with experience that ranges from working as a district engineer supporting the operations of two wastewater treatment plants, as a developer for a national biosolids management company, and as a technology leader for two large equipment manufacturers. She understands the impacts of changing biosolids legislation and the business opportunities present resulting from market drivers associated with the diversion of organics from landfills and a state-wide demand for alternative energy. She has a long history of working with agencies to create forward-thinking, creative programs to address complex challenges, and has assisted with the capture of millions of dollars in grant funding to support those projects/programs.


Ufuk G. Erdal, PhD, P.E., Arcadis

Ufuk is serving as the National Practice Reuse Director at ARCADIS with 25 years of diverse experience in planning, pilot testing, design, procurement, commissioning, and permitting of advanced treatment facilities primarily used in water reuse applications. He got his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University and Virginia Tech respectively. He is the co-author of Potable Reuse Research Compilation: Synthesis of Findings (Reuse-15-01), four WEF Manuals, and more than 60 conference proceedings and peer review journal articles. He recently served as the director on the Water Research Foundation Board to develop sustainable water management solutions using advance research
